Mango, Coconut and Oat crunchies

During the Scottish winter months everyone needs the smell of the tropics floating around their kitchen, which is why I came up with these lush crunchy cookies.While they aren’t the most elegant looking biscuits, what they lack in appearance they make up in flavour and nutrients! I’ve added a link to an article showing the benefits of coconut for our furry pals (or ourselves!). I’ve also put up some photo’s of Mossy getting into the tropical spirit with a couple leis on 🙂

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of oats
  • 1 cup of wholemeal flour
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 handful of dried mango pieces
  • 75g dried coconut
  • 1/2 jar of unsweetened apple sauce
  • 2 big teaspoons of honey

Preheat your oven to 300° and mix together all the ingredients in a large bowl using your hands.

Knead until you have a smooth ball of dough and squash it flat using the palm of your hands.

Shape the mix into rustic cookies and place onto a baking tray.

Bake for 30 minutes or if you want the dog treats to be softer, take them out 10 minutes earlier.

Make sure they cool for 30 mins before your dog (or you) have a taste!

 

Health Benefits

Coconut – Most the benefits of coconut oil come from Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs). Lauric acid has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. Capric and caprylic acid have similar properties and are best known for their anti-fungal effects. Dried coconut provides highly digestible fiber to support and maintain gastrointestinal health, while providing all the nutritional benefits of coconut oil. Read more in the article above!

Mango – They are a great source of vitamins such as potassium, B6, A, C and E as well as alpha carotene and beta carotene. It is also thought to help with arthritis! However, be careful that your dog does not chew on the seed as they contain cyanide.

Apples – this fruit is a great source of fibre and vitamin C & A. It also helps to freshen dog breath and clean their teeth!

Banana – this fruit is rich in vitamin C and potassium. Potassium helps to regulate enzyme function and maintain the health of nerves and muscles, including those of the heart. It is also essential for maintaining an optimal fluid balance in your dog’s body.

Oats – oatmeal is a great source of soluble fibre, which helps dogs with bowel problems. It is also thought to lower cholesterol and reduce heart disease.

Honey – as I already mentioned at the start of this post, honey is a remarkable antiseptic food. It is known to help reduce the symptoms of allergies, fight infections and also heal wounds. In the article mentioned above it shows how honey can be applied to wounds to help the healing process. Unlike other topical antiseptics, honey prevents microbial growth without causing tissue damage.   2. PS: How many of these doggy treats do you recommend your dog can have in a day? (i am assuming Mossy didn’t eat the whole bowl in a oner!)

    Hi Marianne, good question! I would suggest only one or two of these treats a day, and if you have a dog that is on a special diet to loose weight then reduce their meal time portions. Like us, it’s never sensible to have too much of a good thing 🙂
